As temporal people living in a world of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste we are bound, shackled if you will. We live in this space and without a thought limit our existence to this world, even when we claim Christ. Jesus lived in this world, but always operated on a heavenly plane. Jesus focused on the things of Heaven even when faced with terrible death and disease in the world. The paralytic in Matthew 9 and Mark 2 are perfect examples of His Heavenly focus.
A paralyzed man, having to be carried about on a cot is brought to Jesus for healing. If the man can walk, he can be productive. If he can move, he can provide for himself and will not need others to keep him. If he can get up, he can go to the temple, worship, earn money, tithe, give alms, etc, etc. All these things are good, but they all focus on how this man can best benefit the world through the world.
Benefiting this fallen cursed world is not Jesus’ concern. His concerns are to serve, promote and grow the Kingdom of His Father, Heaven. The first thing Jesus tells the paralytic is, “Your sins are forgiven.” Only God can forgive sins. Unlike many religions claiming to be Christian today yet denying Jesus deity, even the Pharisees and scribes knew Jesus was God. They said, “Only God can forgive sin.” No priest, no ritual, nothing Catholic or protestant, no work merit’s this grace, only God Himself.
Too often we have the wrong focus in mind. God must be our portion. If we claim Christ, His kingdom is the paramount concern in our lives. We grow His kingdom for no other reason than out of pure gratitude that He saved our souls. He did the work. He died for you. He forgave your sins. Jesus is God and like Him we must focus our lives only on furthering the Kingdom in Heaven. Our life is not about the world, it is spent for His Kingdom, His glory. Are you living focused on Heaven, or Earth?
